Getting started
Section titled “Getting started”How do I get my existing data in? CSV importers for anything, or a direct migration from a supported CRM. Import contacts first. See Bringing your data in.
What should I do first? Set your fiscal year and pledge goal. Almost every number in Karani is computed against them.
Do I need to install anything? No. Karani runs in a browser. See System requirements.
Numbers that look wrong
Section titled “Numbers that look wrong”Why is my percent funded in the hundreds? Your pledge goal is still at the $10,000 default.
Why is my pledged total so low? Pledge start dates. Karani counts a pledge from its start date forward, so long-standing pledges entered with today’s date contribute almost nothing this year. See Adding a pledge.
Why is everyone behind on giving? Same cause, usually. See Donors Behind on Giving.
Why don’t my totals match my organisation’s report? Gift date vs. processing date, fees, soft credits, and display-only gifts. Understanding your numbers explains each.
Contacts
Section titled “Contacts”Should I delete or archive? Archive. Deleting removes the contact’s giving history, which changes last year’s totals retroactively.
How do I handle a couple? One contact, with the spouse as a family member. Two contacts splits the giving history.
Why does my organisation contact show as just “Church”? Karani displays organisations by last name. Put the whole name — “First Baptist Church” — in the Last Name field and leave First name empty.
I have duplicates. What now? Merge them, then set organisation IDs so it doesn’t happen again.
Tasks and reports
Section titled “Tasks and reports”Why does this report say a donor is unthanked? I thanked them. The interaction has to be type Thank You. If you logged it as Mail, the report doesn’t count it. See Unthanked Donors.
Why is everyone out of touch? I send a newsletter. Because Karani can’t see it. Log every mailing with Bulk tasks & interactions.
What’s the difference between a task and an interaction? A task is future, an interaction is past. Completing a task turns it into an interaction. See Tasks & interactions.
Groups and tags
Section titled “Groups and tags”Group or tag? Group if you’ll send something to them. Tag if it’s a fact about the person. See Groups vs. tags.
How do I email everyone in a group? Through Mailchimp for a real newsletter. See Newsletters. Don’t paste two hundred addresses into your own mail client.
Account and billing
Section titled “Account and billing”Can someone else see my account? Only if you share it with them. Someone paying for your account can’t see it.
Where do I change my password? Settings → Profile if you’re signed in; reset it if you aren’t.
Can I pause instead of cancelling? Often, yes. Email customerservice@karani.co. Much better than cancelling and re-importing later.
How do I get my data out? Settings → Data → Download My Data. Do it before cancelling.
