Emails, phones & addresses
A contact can have as many email addresses, phone numbers, and postal addresses as you need.
Adding them
Section titled “Adding them”On the add or edit form, under Contact Information:
- The Address / Address 2 / City / State / Postal Code fields at the top are the primary address.
- Other Addresses, Phones, and Emails each have an [add] link. Click it to add a row; click it again for another.
Each row has a label — Personal, Work, Home, Mobile, and so on — and the value itself. Labels are what appear on the contact profile, so use them consistently.
Which one gets used
Section titled “Which one gets used”This is the part worth understanding, because Karani has to pick one when there’s more than one.
| Feature | Uses |
|---|---|
| Mailing labels & mail merge | The primary address |
| Contact map | The primary address |
| Sending email | The first email, editable before you send |
| Exporting email addresses | The first email |
| Mailchimp sync | The first email |
| Donor portal invites | The first email |
Removing one
Section titled “Removing one”On the edit form, each additional row has a delete control. Removing an entry takes effect when you save the contact.
Removing an email doesn’t retract anything already sent to it, and doesn’t unsubscribe them from Mailchimp — you’d manage that on the Mailchimp side.
International addresses
Section titled “International addresses”Karani hides the Country field by default, on the assumption most of your contacts are domestic. To show it, go to Settings → Preferences and turn International fields on. That adds Country and adjusts the postal code field.
Turn this on before importing international contacts, or country data in your CSV will have nowhere to map to.
Bad or bouncing addresses
Section titled “Bad or bouncing addresses”Karani doesn’t automatically mark an email as bad when it bounces. If you know an address is dead, either delete it or relabel it (for example, “Old — bounces”) so you don’t keep sending to it.
For systematic bounce handling, see Deliverability.
